World runs on communication and according to James Humes, “The art of communication is the language of leadership”. With the same idea, the concept of Know Your Town, a town’s own magazine, came into being.
When we started out, we limited ourselves to our city – Thane. It always starts from home, isn’t it? In the due course of 10 months, we covered a lot of interesting people from Thane. We ventured out of Thane by covering Ashok Katariya, the founding director of AshokaBuildcon from Nashik for our April edition, followed by the BU Bhandari group from Pune in May and Sanjeev Pendharkar of Vicco in June. By this time, our single edition had reached various elites in different cities of Maharashtra and we quickly became popular as the only town-centric magazine.
After the tremendous response, in July we decided to take the plunge by launching seven editions in a single month. Today, KYT has seven faces – one from Thane, Mumbai, Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Aurangabad and New Mumbai. Our aim is to weave a ‘fabric of belonging’ towards beautiful Maharashtra. While our focus has always been covering the most successful from every city, we see to it that every interview makes the reader find something new about the already famous personalities. That is what makes KYT interviews more unique and exclusive.
The idea of town magazines is one of its kind and is the brainchild of our Executive Editor, Nikhil Ballal. Having a background of media and having worked in different types of media, Nikhil Ballal felt the need to fill in the vacuum of positive town centric features, which was left unnoticed by the mainstream media. With this thought of spreading positivity, Nikhil stated KYT in a tabloid format three years ago. The tenets that have driven change in a publication twice the age of Thane Vaibhav, inspired our then two-year old ‘Know Your Town’ to emerge in a new avatar. This metamorphosis follows extensive research and interaction with readers, advertisers, media experts and of course, kind well-wishers. Like in any Indian family, all decisions at Thane Vaibhav /KYT are taken wisely, after huddling together with family members and near and dear ones.
During our research, our readers told us they wanted a bigger treat than just a nutritious staple diet – a four course meal, complete with appetizers and dessert- at least once in a month. This would give them more ‘food for thought’, a larger menu to choose from, more time to ruminate and digest the ideas. This feedback prompted us to revisit our strategy, and redesign Know Your Town as a monthly, with a longer shelf-life, catering to a wider cross- section of society.
We, as pioneers of news publishing in Thane way back in 1975, are glad to be trailblazers all over again, with a magazine dedicated to various towns in Maharashtra. As always, we seek your unstinted support to make a success of this endeavour.
