He has been instrumental in giving Thane its first IVF baby in 1999 that led to the flooding of many such hopefuls to his center from all over Maharashtra.
Born to a Math’s PhD scholar and a mother who was post graduate in Marathi, having two highly educated brothers one an organic chemistry PhD and the other an IITian working in NASA also blessed with a renowned Marathi poetess Smt.Shanta Shelke as an aunt, Dr. Abhijit Koshti was the first generation doctor. His empathy for the sick and his mother’s illness led to his determination to become a doctor and a very successful one at that!!
Though, being one of the few students with no medical background, he was fully confident in getting success in ART (Assisted Reproductive Techniques). The Joy of bringing a new life made him choose Gynaecology and he became a part of Dr.Hinduja’s team that gave India her very first IVF baby –the fruit of the rigorous efforts of the team at the Institute for Research in Reproduction (IRR). The success of the first IVF baby gave KEM hospital an overwhelming response from all over India!!
Dr. Koshti’s experience of more than three years in KEM hospital handling all types of cases and intensive training at Sydney IVF centre, Australia gave him the push to start his own fertility clinic and IVF centre in Thane on 21st June 1998 and today he is marching successfully in the 25th year –SILVER JUBILEE YEAR!!!
No small feat indeed! For though there are many IVF centres today, it’s the experience and expertise that counts. The success formula of his IVF centres is attributed to his copying nature because conceiving is a natural process. He says, “We can identify those who are not able to conceive naturally within the first few sittings and with primary investigations, thus preventing mental and financial trauma to the patients, and identifying the natural factors missing in the process of conception and adding those elements in the process, to make it happen for the patients.”
Dr. Koshti’s Hope fertility clinic has become a one stop solution for all fertility issues. Their state of the art facility right since inception has benefited thousands of couples in the last two and a half decades. They have the best of well equipped technology in the form of micro manipulators, incubators, laminar air flow stations which have given the best results to the families. Former Guardian Minister Shri Madhukar Pichad and Ex Municipal commissioner of Thane Mr. K.P. Bakshi had visited his clinic and appreciated his work.
When asked about the definition of Infertility and how it is caused ,he said,”that those married couples below 30 years of age who are unable to conceive within two years of marriage and those couples that are between 30-35 years that are not able to conceive within one year of marriage are considered infertile. Unfortunately, infertility is still considered to be a social stigma and many couples find it difficult to accept it and approach the doctor too late. Since many patients can be treated by a few corrective measures, IVF is used as a last resort. His good communication skills, a positive approach and a finesse to ease the patients are at the core of his success.
According to him, infertility has increased due to changes in lifestyle over the last few decades. Prolonged education, hectic careers and diminishing sexuality among married couples are among the root causes of infertility.
Having given more than 1000 IVF babies and with a success rate upto 50% Dr Koshti has encountered many challenging cases. There was a case of a 25 year newly married lady facing sudden failure to get periods and then eventually diagnosed as a menopausal was under terrible mental shock. Thanks to the expertise of Dr. Koshti, she was not only cured but also was able to conceive and save her three-year-old marriage. Today that lady is a happy mother!
Dr Koshti also shares one case where a renowned lawyer from Solapur with a zero sperm count had lost all hopes of becoming a biological father but finally could fulfill his dream at their Hope fertility clinic. In another case where a patient suffering with Unicornuate uterus (half uterus) had multiple failed IVF attempts at top Mumbai hospitals was also able to conceive at Hope Fertility clinic with the help of surgical expertise of Dr. Koshti. These challenging cases have added feathers in his cap!!
With the entry of next Generation Dr. Prathama Koshti Kulkarni, Hope Fertility Clinic has got a new ‘Hope’. Dr.Prathama has got well trained under the able guidance of her father Dr Koshti. She has inherited empathetic qualities from her father. Her empathetic behaviour has touched the hearts of many families. Mrs. Smita’s professional training at Sydney IVF centre, Australia has benefitted many couples over the years. The culture room which is considered to be the heart of the IVF has been extraordinarily looked after by Mrs.Smita consistently for the last two and a half decades.
